"Crochet" Magazine Article - 2002 Issue
How "Lace Pottery" Came About.... Strangely enough Maggie's pottery career
started with crochet designing in 1981! Between 1981 and 1996, I
designed hundreds of afghans and home decor projects for major
needlework publishers and yarn companies. Maggie's designs have been featured
in numerous leaflets, magazines, books and on Television.
In 1996 she started Maggie's Crochet and the
MaggiesCrochet.com website.
Maggie publishes and manufactures books and patterns based on her unique crochet
designs. She currently has twenty two books and over three hundred
patterns in the Maggie's Crochet product line. We are the largest "all
crochet" site on the internet with over 5,000 patterns and supplies.
In 2002 she took a pottery class with her teenage daughter as a way of
spending time with her. "No matter how hard I tried I could never get the
hang of the wheel. Luckily there was another way! The instructor
demonstrated hand building with nylon lace. The wheels in my head began
to turn. I had this large, exquisite antique lace collection at home
and I knew how to design any kind of lace to use for impressions. I
started bringing doilies into class and hand building bowls. After
taking several pottery classes I then rented studio space. In the
studio I worked alone with no heat or air. This got to be very tiring
so I went back to being a crochet designer. I named my creations
“Lace Pottery" and posted pictures on my crochet website with a note
that read “I will produce the pottery again in 2006”." - Maggie
In 2006 Maggie hired one of her customers and she was ecstatic
over the Lace Pottery, so it inspired me to start producing it again. She gets lots of help and support from
her husband, her son, and the great
people who work for Maggie. Every piece of pottery is handmade in
her Kernersville, NC studio. "Lace Pottery" is on exhibit at
our gallery and a few
galleries in our area. Also, I travel around
the different Arts and Crafts Shows every year.
Check out our Gallery Page for more information.
